our client approached us to design a rear-yard studio to replace his dilapidated garage using the same footprint. the studio's mid-block location faces a private gravel alley that services the surrounding apartment and commercial buildings. therefore, the minimal privacy, semi-industrial setting and lack of buffer from the surrounding uses provided us with a significant design challenge.
the compact 350 square foot studio is situated in the rear corner of the property and was required to have a solid exterior wall at each property line. of the other exterior two walls, one faces the alley while the other faces into the client's landscaped rear yard. the rear yard serves as the entry into the studio while providing an extension of its space. clerestory windows are carefully placed to maximize privacy from the alley, and with skylights and a glass entry door, bring an abundance of natural light into the studio. the plywood cladding, along with the aluminum windows, is reflective of the site's industrial context.
the studio contains a large flex space, sleeping/storage lofts, bathroom, and storage area. the flex space can be used either as an office or as living and dining spaces and has provisions for a small kitchenette if used as a residential studio.
